Meet Simon, who is about to finish his Master's degree in Mathematics and Economics at Aarhus University. Simon is collaborating with Energi Danmark's analysis team on his thesis. He wanted to engage in a collaboration with a company to get a more empirically based thesis and together with Energi Danmark, he is able to combine theory and practice.

"I think that a thesis collaboration with a company is absolutely great. It might be the best thing I have done in the process of planning and writing my master thesis. You really get to experience that your theoretical knowledge can be translated into practice. Your work is highly valued and useful, and that really encourage me to write a good thesis."

Simon was searching for master thesis collaborations on the internet when he found a notice of a master thesis collaboration with Energi Danmark. Prior to his master thesis, he considered various subjects and had a hard time deciding what he wanted to write about. When he came across Energi Danmark's notice in his search, he felt that this exact thesis collaboration could comply with his wishes.

My thesis has a mathematical focus. I am writing about a new algorithm on the European energy market that calculates the price and allocates the electricity around Europe based on buy and sales bids placed by the power traders. It is quite complex to get acquainted with the market but my "colleagues" are very competent and always ready to help me.

Simon has his own office space with a computer in the Analysis Department. It is a full-time job to write a thesis, and Simon is at the office at Energi Danmark four to five times a week from around eight in the morning to four in the afternoon. Also, Simon has a fixed contact person, Lasse from the Analysis Department, who acts as a sparring partner to Simon. Lasse comes with ideas and inputs and helps Simon with the more practical issues.

"If you want to collaborate with a company on your master thesis, my advise is to apply for a thesis collaboration in a company you find interesting. Make some research, write about you motivations and ideas, and then apply - even though the company might not officially be looking for a thesis collaboration."
